April to July 2012: Eventually, after a few delays, the scaffolding was completed and our contractors were able to start work. The wettest spring and summer for many years did not prevent work from continuing, with the presence on site on most working days stopped only by funerals, weddings and midweek services. Amazingly, the appalling weather and heavy rainfall did not cause any significant delays.
August 2012: The curate, Rev Steve Wilkinson, is the latest in a series of visitors to ascend the scaffolding to inspect the work and take close-up pictures of the repairs, just before the scaffolding is due to come down. Many of the pictures illustrating the rest of this series of articles are his, with a few from Nigel Jackson and other members of the Spire Appeal Committee.
The Repairs: A comprehensive program of works had been defined for the contractors by our architect. Various skills were in evidence – ranging from carpentry to painting and decorating, mortar pointing to elaborate stone carving, fine metal crafting to steel welding! Follow the links below for more information and pictures of each area of work.
